The News Media’s Betrayal of Ethical journalism and Human Rights

Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. Ethical journalism strives to ensure the free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. An ethical journalist acts with integrity. . . Ethical journalism should be accurate and fair. Journalists should be honest and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

SPJ Code of Ethics

Any half decent and relatively responsible person who has watched the disingenuous and unprincipled “reporting” at Fox News by penny-ante hacks — such as Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Jeanine Pirro and other such reprehensible thumbsuckers — might perhaps initially wonder at the IQ level of their audience, but then on reflection, realise that it was with that selfsame IQ level that 74,224,319 Americans voted for Donald Trump — who during his four-year tenure unashamedly regaled them with some 30,573 false or misleading claims not seriously challenged by the news media — which even by bombastic American standards, was for Tump a mind-boggling achievement:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers

Article 19, Universal Declaration of Human Rights

While Trump’s right to unleash his xenophobic rants is apparently enshrined within Article 19, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That same right, however, has been denied to the majority of the American people by powerful and well-financed pro-Israel groups helped by the disgraceful subservience of “stooge” news media organisations.

US news media subservience to an Apartheid Israeli State that is irrefutably guilty of crimes against humanity was in December 2018 confirmed in a new study titled “50 Years of Occupation” and published by 416Labs, a research and data analytics company based in Canada. The company analysed nearly 100,000 news headlines regarding the conflict in the American press over the past five decades and found that the Israeli point of view was featured much more prominently than the Palestinian one, and that references to suffering of Palestinians as refugees or living under occupation had gradually diminished.

The report’s findings clearly demonstrated a persistent bias in coverage of the conflict — with Israeli narratives being privileged so that despite the continued brutal entrenchment of the occupation, the very subjects relevant to the reality of the Palestinian people’s illegal persecution, have remained unreported

Though the media’s general disregard for Israeli crimes is most blatant in the US, the fact remains that the majority of the world’s people are still not aware that according to an April 2021 Human Rights Watch report: “About 6.8 million Jewish Israelis and 6.8 million Palestinians live today between the Mediterranean Sea and Jordan River, an area encompassing Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), the latter made up of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Throughout most of this area, Israel is the sole governing power; in the remainder, it exercises primary authority alongside limited Palestinian self-rule. Across these areas and in most aspects of life, Israeli authorities methodically privilege Jewish Israelis and discriminate against Palestinians. Laws, policies, and statements by leading Israeli officials make plain that the objective of maintaining Jewish Israeli control over demographics, political power, and land has long guided government policy. In pursuit of this goal, authorities have dispossessed, confined, forcibly separated, and subjugated Palestinians by virtue of their identity to varying degrees of intensity. In certain areas, as described in this report, these deprivations are so severe that they amount to the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution.

There is no doubt that the world’s news media organisations have not only failed to abide by the SPJ’s Code of Ethics, but have also often deliberately distorted the actual facts so as to accommodate the Israeli-instigated assertion that most, if not all, Arabs — and Palestinians in particular— are terrorists bent on Israel’s destruction: an assertion lacking veracity and invariably veiled with not-so-subtle “blackmail” reminders of the Holocaust.

Zionism . . . promotes the narrative that the Nazi holocaust is exceptional in human history — despite it being one of many holocausts from Native Americans North and South to Armenia and Rwanda. It sets Jews apart from the victims and survivors of other genocides instead of uniting us with them . . . Billions of US dollars flow annually to Israel to sustain the occupation and Israel’s sophisticated and brutal army. The war machine they fund is a leader in the global arms industry, which drains resources craved by a world in desperate need of water, food, health care, housing and education.

International Jewish anti-Zionist Network Charter

The news industry’s failure to either respect or enforce its various codes of ethics — as championed by organisations such as the Society of Professional Journalist’s Code of Ethics: and the Independent Press Standards Organization not only confirms the industry’s lamentable hypocrisy, but also highlights a disgraceful lack of respect or support for the 66 journalists who during 2020 were murdered while pursuing their professional duties of taking responsibility for the accuracy of their information with verification before its release; by balancing the public's need for information against potential harm or discomfort; by avoiding conflicts of interest, real or perceived; and by explaining ethical choices and processes to their audience. The news industry’s tendency for biased censorship is most evident in its reports on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict where the professional ethics of journalism ’s “objectivity” is at its worst and with nowhere to hide.

Such blatantly biased reporting which favours Israel and deprecates the value and rights of the Palestinian people, will in the longterm only serve to undermine and ultimately destroy the credibility which is essential for the news media’s effective existence without the debilitating curbs imposed by influential and well-financed individuals and organisations serving special interest agendas.

Without an unfettered press, without liberty of speech, all of the outward forms and structures of free institutions are a sham, a pretence — the sheerest mockery. If the press is not free; if speech is not independent and untrammelled; if the mind is shackled or made impotent through fear, it makes no difference under what form of government you live, you are a subject and not a citizen.
