False Accusations of “Anti-Semitism” And “Fake News” Are Threatening The Right To Freedom Of Expression

February 2, 2018

“Israelis and American Jews fully agree that the memory of the Holocaust is an indispensable weapon — one that must be used relentlessly against their common enemy . . . Jewish organisations and individuals thus labour continuously to remind the world of it. In America, the perpetuation of the Holocaust memory is now a $100-million-a-year enterprise, part of which is government funded.”

According to Israeli author Moshe Leshem, the expansion of Israeli power is commensurate with the expansion of “Holocaust” propaganda. Balaam’s Curse: How Israel Lost its Way, and How it Can Find it Again, Simon & Schuster, 1989.

As a consequence of January 27 being a Jewish lobby enforced Day of Remembrance, people everywhere have been able to gorge themselves on a feast of media reports concerning the guilt-inducing observance of Holocaust Memorial Day. Consequently Western politicians, ecclesiastic notables, and other fawning hypocrites — with suitably bowed heads and feigned reverence — duly paid their respects to the “six million” Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis.

While the heinous barbarity of the Holocaust should always be remembered as a “Never Again” example of “man's inhumanity to man,” it is equally important not to forget that allowing such remembrance to be used for silencing morally legitimate criticism, is untenable; not to forget the millions of others who were eliminated including Romany Gypsies and homosexuals whom the Nazis regarded as being “sub-human”; and not to forget the hundreds of millions of innocent children who since World War Two have perished as a result of hypocrisy, indifference, neglect, or war by the supposedly “civilised” countries of the West, as opposed to the “shithole” countries from the rest of the world. goo.gl/xHaK6U .

“As we speak, the right to healthcare still isn’t a reality for millions of children around the globe, and more particularly in developing countries. Every year, over 13 million children under the age of 5 years die from illnesses which could have been avoided or treated.”

In 1960 alone, the number of children who died — from hunger, easily preventable diseases, and other poverty related causes — was 18,900,000: more than three times the Jewish Holocaust death toll. Yet because there is no well financed and organised global “Child Mortality Industry” similar to the “Holocaust Industry,” this annual “genocide” of young children receives no mainstream media coverage. Apart from being responsible for instigating this double standard concern for the dead, Zionist pro-Israel lobbies have also blackmailed, bribed, and bullied  goo.gl/e5dJ1v  the West into keeping alive the concept “anti-Semitism” for use as a weapon to silence justified condemnation of Israel’s inhumane oppression of Palestinians and the illegal seizure of their land — to facilitate the building of more Jewish only Apartheid settlements — in the occupied Palestinian territories.  goo.gl/sFUL4k

By allowing Israel with its genocidal Zionist ideology to hijack the Holocaust for the achievement  of political objectives — and by silently tolerating or actively supporting the pursuit of such objectives — diaspora Jews have betrayed the memory of victims of the Holocaust; have betrayed the moral principles set out in the commandments in the Torah and in the later literature which include rules about justice, equality before the law, loving-kindness, social welfare, and the ideals of peace and political freedom; and have been complicit in the push for legislation in Western countries to criminalise any legitimate activism that dares to challenge Israeli policies whether by boycott or criticism. Such pro-Israel legislation legitimises its criminality, threatens the right to freedom of expression, and erodes all the other  tenets of democracy.  goo.gl/dorHEv

While the concept of “anti-Semitism” continues to be aggressively deployed as a weapon to silence dissent against Israel — which also bars entry to foreigners supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement  goo.gl/xw7adm — the justified portrayal of fake news as the greatest danger to democracy has likewise been hijacked and the year 2017 began with an ignorant, mentally disturbed, racist, sexist, and psychopathic U.S President shouting “you are fake news” at a reporter, and ended with a suggestion that fake news didn’t really matter at all. During its first year in office the Trump administration unleashed a torrent of lies — some were minor, but most were blatant, outright deceptions — while redefining what is regarded as truth; while contesting clear facts to the point of transforming them into lies; and while consciously misusing the concept and phrase of “fake news” to undermine not only true reports, but also the very idea of truth itself.

It did not take long for the Trumpean technique to be adopted by some Southeast Asian countries where government accusations of fake news have morphed into the actual arrest of journalists and the closing of news outlets across the region. Even some European nations — led by the French Republic goo.gl/b2tfsy — are also seriously considering jumping onto the bandwagon by introducing legislation to counter fake news particularly on social media network sites with Facebook having already admitted to deleting accounts at the direction of the U.S. and Israeli governments.

“In September of last year, we noted that Facebook representatives were meeting with the Israeli government to determine which Facebook accounts of Palestinians should be deleted on the ground that they constituted “incitement.” The meetings — called for and presided over by one of the most extremist and authoritarian Israeli officials, pro-settlement Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked — came after Israel threatened Facebook that its failure to voluntarily comply with Israeli deletion orders would result in the enactment of laws requiring Facebook to do so, upon pain of being severely fined or even blocked in the country.

As someone who has been repeatedly blocked and had posts critical of Israeli crimes against humanity deleted by Facebook, this writer is not only familiar with the frustrating injustice of being arbitrarily censored on social media network sites, but also recognises that while some degree of internet content regulation is necessary, regulatory powers must not use “fake news” as an excuse to either censor alternative viewpoints or to suppress what is often the uncomfortable truth.

“People who believe in freedom of expression have spent centuries fighting against censorship, in whatever form. We have to be certain the “Net” doesn’t become the site for technological book burning.”

John Ralston Saul, Canadian philosopher, novelist and essayist.
